Check the account number first
For Quick Pay, enter the account number exactly as shown on your bill, including dashes. Do not use only the service address unless the official portal offers that option.
Choose portal vs Quick Pay
Quick Pay is best for a one-time payment. Portal login is better if you need past statements, eBilling, autopay, contact preferences or multi-account management.
Check fees before submitting
WUM lists a 3.65% card processing fee with a $2.50 minimum and a $1.95 eCheck convenience fee. ACH bank autodraft is listed as no-fee when set up through WUM’s ACH process.
Save proof
Save the confirmation number, payment amount, date/time, payment method and screenshot. This matters if the account is late or service is at risk.

Issue |
What to say |
Responsibility clue |
|---|---|---|
Water leak in road or near meter box |
“Water is leaking at [address/cross street]. It appears to be [road side / meter box / yard].” |
WUM handles main lines, utility easements, meter box leaks and road-side of the meter. |

“The leak appears to be between the meter box and my home.” |
WUM says this is usually the customer’s private line and recommends a plumber. |
No water |
“My home has no water at [service address]. Neighbors [are/are not] affected.” |
Could be system issue, locked-out service, valve problem, or private plumbing. |
Rusty water |
“Water looks rusty after [main break/hydrant flush/unknown].” |
WUM says main breaks or hydrant flushing can stir sediment; run cold water until clear and call if it persists. |

“Water smells like sulfur/eggs at [address].” |
WUM says sulfur can occur naturally in aquifer water; call if taste/smell is unpleasant or abnormal. |

High Water Bill, Leak Check and Leak Relief
Common causes
WUM points to seasonal outdoor watering, irrigation systems, running hoses, toilet leaks and unusual household use as frequent reasons for a high bill.
Toilet dye test
Add food coloring to the full toilet tank. Do not flush. If color appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.
Leak relief
WUM’s voluntary Leak Bill Relief Program can provide bill credit after an eligible repaired leak, with program rules and limits.
Check |
What to look for |
Next action |
|---|---|---|
Meter reading |
Compare the bill reading to the meter. WUM says meters read like a car odometer. |
Keep a simple meter log to spot spikes before the next 60-day bill. |
Irrigation |
A standard garden hose sprinkler for one hour can use about 1,020 gallons; three times weekly can exceed 12,000 gallons monthly. |
Check timer, zones, rain sensor, broken heads and hidden underground leaks. |
Toilets |
Small toilet leak can add hundreds of gallons each month. |
Use dye test, replace flapper/fill valve, keep receipt. |
Private line leak |
Leaks after the meter are homeowner responsibility. |
Hire plumber and keep repair invoice/parts receipt. |
Leak relief proof |
WUM asks for plumber receipt or proof of parts purchased. |
Submit application and documents by email, fax, mail or in person. |
Leak relief limits |
One leak relief request every 12 months; maximum credit up to $5,000 within 12 months. |
Program is bill relief only, not insurance and not repair/damage coverage. |
Leak Relief Program note: WUM says eligible customers are automatically enrolled for a voluntary $2 per month fee, equal to $4 per bi-monthly bill, starting August 2025. Owners who want to opt out should email leakoptout@waterga.com with name, account number, service address and contact phone number.
Official high-bill links:
Water Quality, CCRs, Rusty Water, Cloudy Water and Hard Water
Water source
WUM says about 99% of customer water comes from the Floridan Aquifer, a protected groundwater source beneath a clay layer.
CCR reports
Consumer Confidence Reports summarize prior-year water test results and are published through the WUM CCR page for each water system.
Monthly testing
WUM says microbiological sampling occurs monthly, while other testing schedules such as lead and copper are determined by Georgia EPD.
Question |
Useful answer |
What to do |
|---|---|---|
Where does my water come from? |
Mostly Floridan Aquifer groundwater, naturally filtered through earth and limestone formations. |
Use your system’s CCR for local test results. |
Rusty water |
Often caused by water main break or hydrant flushing that stirs sediment. |
Run cold water until clear; call WUM if it continues. |
Cloudy / milky water |
Usually tiny air bubbles, often harmless, especially in cold weather or pressure changes. |
Let water sit in an open container and watch whether bubbles clear. |
Egg smell / sulfur |
Sulfur can occur naturally in aquifer water and is often masked by chlorination. |
Call WUM if the smell is strong or unpleasant; they may investigate/flush. |
Chlorine taste |
WUM suggests lemon or leaving cold tap water uncovered overnight to dissipate chlorine taste. |
Call if taste is extreme or abnormal. |
Hard water |
Water from the Floridan Aquifer is hard due to dissolved calcium/minerals. |
Use softener if preferred; clean limescale on fixtures. |

- Wastewater mains.
- Lift stations.
- Treatment facilities.
- Drain fields that treat/manage wastewater.
Customer responsibility
- Wastewater lines and fixtures inside the home.
- Septic tank, if applicable.
- Wastewater pump, if applicable.
- Service line from home to the WUM wastewater main.
Not every WUM water customer has WUM wastewater: WUM says to check your bi-monthly bill for additional services if you are unsure whether WUM also provides wastewater service at your address.
Before Digging, Fencing, Irrigation or Tree Work
1. Plan
Mark the work area before submitting a locate request.
2. Call 811
Use Georgia 811 or call 811 at least 2 days before digging.
3. Wait
Utilities respond to mark temporary utility locations.
4. Dig carefully
Even small shovel projects can damage water, sewer, gas, cable or power lines.
Use for small projects too: WUM says even planting a tree with a shovel should go through utility locates. This can prevent service interruption, repair bills, legal issues and safety risks.
Conservation, Winter Tips and Disaster Prep
Situation |
WUM-backed useful detail |
Action |

Outdoor watering |
Georgia’s year-round outdoor watering rules generally allow daily outdoor watering only between 4 PM and 10 AM for EPD-permitted systems. |
Water early morning or evening; avoid midday evaporation. |
Conservation pricing |
WUM says many customers pay a base rate and usage tiers where price increases as consumption rises. |
Use less water to avoid higher blocks. |
Freezing weather |
WUM recommends insulating pipes, heating exposed pipe areas, sealing openings and keeping some tap water running if needed. |
Balance freeze prevention with bill impact. |
Storm / hurricane prep |
WUM maintains emergency plans, generators and sewer pumps, but service can still be limited during disasters. |
Follow local evacuation guidance and keep emergency water supplies. |
Well sites |
Community wells and well sites are private utility property; WUM warns against trespassing or tampering. |
If you see unauthorized activity at a well site, call police. |
